For students
Are you worried about your essay or dissertation for your university course?
Maybe you are unsure whether all your spelling and grammar is perfect, or maybe you are just finding it difficult to get your essay finished.
Either way, I can help!
As an ex-university lecturer, I have loads of experience in helping students to write and to polish their work.
I know what a good university essay looks like – I have marked thousands of them!
I'm also used to speakers of English as a second language, and have a qualification in teaching it.
I specialise in working with:
- arts and humanities students.
- musicology students (I taught musicology for over 20 years).
- German Studies students (especially the Weimar Republic and Third Reich – my PhD looked at these periods).
- Buddhist Studies students.

Proofreading
If you have finished writing and want to be sure that your English is in top shape, I will check it for you. I will also check things like whether your headings, footnotes and bibliography are formatted correctly and consistently. Please note, though, that to follow the ethics policies of most British universities, I will not rewrite anything for you; I will just make sure that what is there is correct.
Writing Coaching
If you are struggling to get your essay into its final form, I offer coaching that will help you get your ideas down on paper (or screen!). Usually these sessions take place online, probably over several weeks or months. You will need to have done some research and have some idea about what you want to say on your topic, but we can work together on how you can turn this into an essay.
Copyediting
While proofreading will check your text for typos and punctuation mistakes, copyediting will make your text flow. The copyeditor’s objective eye will be able to tell you when your sentence doesn’t quite work and what needs rephrasing to make your meaning clear, and she will give you suggestions about what might work better. The result will be something that your readers will love to read!
Please note that most British universities do not allow students to use a copyeditor. It may be an option for students in the US, however.

Prices will vary according to what shape your text is in, and how much work it will need; the prices below are to give you a rough idea.

Not in the UK? No problem - I can accept payment in other currencies.
Proofreading
- Undergraduate essay, up to 3,000 words: £25-40
- Undergraduate or postgraduate essay, 3,001-5,000 words: £55-65
- Undergraduate dissertation, up to 10,000 words: £85-95
- Masters thesis, up to 15,000 words: £195-250
- PhD thesis, up to 75,000 words: £400-600
- PhD thesis, up to 100,000 words: £600-950
If you need me to work over a weekend to meet your deadline, this will be an extra £150 per weekend day.
Copyediting
- Undergraduate essay, up to 3,000 words: £35-45
- Undergraduate or postgraduate essay, 3,001-5,000 words: £65-80
- Undergraduate dissertation, up to 10,000 words: £95-115
- Masters thesis, up to 15,000 words: £200-275
- PhD thesis, up to 75,000 words: £425-575
- PhD thesis, up to 100,000 words: £575-900
If you need me to work over a weekend to meet your deadline, this will be an extra £150 per weekend day.
Writing coaching
Writing coaching sessions are
£28 / hour.*
They generally take place via Zoom or Skype.
